This book contains a complete course for anyone wanting to learn how to play acoustic or electric Guitar. After 20 years of teaching Guitar, Justin has realized that the majority of beginner guitarists struggle with the same problems, and has worked out how to help them overcome the things they find difficult. The course is divided into nine stages; each stage has enough new material to keep you busy , but not so much that you'll feel overwhelmed. Each stage has a practice routine and ear-training exercises that will help you quickly improve. The book comes with two specially-recorded CDs containing demonstrations of every chord, technique and exercise you'll need. Along the way you'll learn · · * How to choose a Guitar, amp and accessories · * How to read chord boxes and tab · * Tuning up · * All the important open and power chords · * Rhythm Guitar techniques · * How to practice · * Playing 12-bar blues · * Fingerstyle patterns · * The pentatonic scale and basic improvisations · ... and much, much more. And, of course, this book is complemented by the online videos on justinguitar.com. In addition to the nine course stages the book contains an exclusive bonus section to expand your chord knowledge and blues playing.

At 74 years old I wanted to play guitar for years. This beginners course is fantastic, in that it moves the student along at a slow pace. Its up to the student to practice for a faster pace. The real neat thing that I like is the 10 learning segments, each with the beginning of songs to get us started correctly. That is 100 modern songs that we can practice with, to cut the boredom that can sneak into the practice sessions. Even better yet you can go the authors web site, and YouTube to see him show up close, exactly where put your fingers. Please read the info on Justinguitat.com that is all free. I also purchased the spiral bound song book for complete song lyrics, cords, tips, and a wealth of information. Good luck and don't quit!Product details

JustinguitarCom Beginner Guitar Course Book 2 Cds Justin Sandercoe 9781849386692 Books Reviews
This is the best beginner's program that I have found. Coordinates seamlessly with justinguitar.com and the 2 volumes of songbooks. You want to learn the guitar? Get this and the 2 songbooks and you are set.
His online is awesome.
Justin is an amazing guitar teacher. His method works well. It's suitable for young and old. Because I am watching his videos, I wondered whether the book was necessary. It's turned out to be helpful. As with other things, learning to play the guitar takes time and practice. You will get out of it what you put into it. You will know pretty quickly whether you want to put in the time it takes to make progress.
I highly recommend this book along with using Justin's song book and his web site. I think having the live videos along with the book in front of you is the next best thing to having a teacher teach you in person. Great easy to follow lessons geared toward the total beginner with no music backround. I would challenge anybody to find a better beginner book(and program) to get you started playing guitar.
Be aware that you need to purchase both the instruction book and the song book as they refer to each other. A nice learning system as you get right into playing a modern selection of songs as soon as you learn a couple of cords. Gives you something to look forward to. He doesn't use traditional "tab" format which took a little getting used to. His system is simpler.
THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!! What a gift Justin has put together! I'm a 51 year old musical coward and just learning to play. I saw the info online but I like having the book to flip back and forth while practicing. The beginner song book is great as well.
Just should win the Nobel Peace Prize!
If you can't get the course online, get this. If you're the kind that likes to have something tangible to read and review after watching the video lessons, get this. If you're wondering if Justinguitar lives up to the hype, it does.
Justin's Beginner Course is the absolute most complete and most structured guitar instruction program I have seen outside of the Berkeley course (the white 1, 2, 3 book). The only thing this doesn't cover is reading music, but TBH, if all you want to do is play songs and improv some blues of a bit of lead, you don't need to read music. TAB and 'fake' book chord charts will provide you with all you need.
BTW, TAB in one form or another (telling you which string to finger and where, as opposed to a note name) has existed since at least the Renaissance, and probably much earlier, for lutes so the concept is far from new (in fact, it predates the modern grand staff).
Fine primer to take one's guitar playing aspirations from complete novice to decent familiarity with open chords (major, minor, 7th plus some funky versions of such), common rhythms and simple songs. The paperback/CD combo should be supplemented by the free online demos. It is useful to have a local guitar teacher (hence 4 star rating) assist every month or so with whatever are perceived as problematic areas, proper pick/strumming technique and such. Yeah, one could learn most of this solely via free online sources, but such is not comprehensively organized by a veteran teacher who seems unrelentingly cheerful in both the text, and the online materials. One can work at whatever pace suits....took me a year...if the periods "off" practice don't get so long the technique backslides and one has to return to earlier lessons. Note that the Intermediate Course merges seamlessly with the Course, and that is very helpful for someone who presses ahead, in my case despite obvious lack of innate talent, towards becoming good enough to play, after some effort/practice, about 2/3s of popular guitar tunes.
